Rao honored by Neurocritical Care Society

Dr. Chethan Venkatasubba Rao, assistant professor of neurology, recently received the Fellow of the Neurocritical Care Society Award at the 2018 Neurocritical Care Society Annual Meeting, where he also received the presidential citation for his contributions to the society, moderated a session titled "Build, Launch Run: How to Successfully Establish a Neurocritical Care Service" and had two distinguished posters.

Walker receives scholar award

Dr. Cheryl Walker, director of the Center for Precision Environmental Health at Baylor, has been honored with the Society of Toxicology's Distinguished Toxicology Scholar Award, which is presented to a member of the society who has made substantial and seminal scientific contributions to its understanding of the science of toxicology. She will receive the award on March 10, 2019, during the SOT 58th Annual Meeting and ToxExpo.

Feb. 19: Black History Month panel discussion

As part of Black History Month, the Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Equity and the Student National Medical Association at Baylor present "Microaggressions in Medicine," Feb. 19, 6:15 p.m. in room M112 at main Baylor. This panel discussion will address the impact of microaggressions – intentional or unintentional verbal and behavioral indignities, generally directed toward a group. Panelists include Provost Dr. Alicia Monroe, Dr. Jocelyn Greely of obstetrics and gynecology, Ombuds Melanie Jagneaux, and others. See more on this and other Black History Month events.

Feb. 20: Education Grand Rounds on leadership

Education Grand Rounds, "The Social Side of Leadership: Developing Meaningful Relationships to Foster Community and Improve Performance," presented by Dr. Kristin Cullen-Lester, assistant professor of management at the University of Houston, is Wednesday, Feb. 20, at noon in Kleberg Auditorium. Feb. 20: Alford Distinguished Lecture

The fifth annual Bobby R. Alford Grand Rounds Distinguished Lecture is Wednesday, Feb. 20, 4 p.m., room M112 at main Baylor, with Dr. Joy Wu, assistant professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, speaking on "Interactions Between Bone and Blood in Health Disease." The lecture is endowed by the Diana Helis Henry and Adrienne Helis Malvin Medical Research Foundation.

Feb. 21: DocTalk on heart health

DocTalk on Thursday, Feb. 21, at noon in Cullen Auditorium, will address heart health, including heart disease prevention, with Dr. Vijay Nambi, assistant professor of medicine. Eligible employees who attend can earn BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Feb. 21: Ethics Conversation takes on reproductive changes

Dr. Claire Horner, assistant professor in the Center for Medical Ethics & Health Policy, presents "Million Dollar Baby: Surrogacy Contracts, Reproductive Technologies and the Changing Face of Parenthood" as part of the Center's Conversation Series. Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at Damian's Cucina Italiana, 3011 Smith St. Register online to attend.

Rodeo events

Go Texan Day is Friday, Feb. 22. Based on department dress codes, you may wear western apparel. Take a photo of you and your colleagues wearing western gear and send it to Anna Kiappes by 2 p.m. on Friday to be featured on Baylor's social media channels. Don't forget to include names and department information with your photo. Get in on even more rodeo fun by joining the Baylor team for the 2019 Rodeo Run, Saturday, Feb. 23, in downtown Houston, sponsored in part by the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center. Feb. 23: Girls Elevated

Girls Elevated, sponsored by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Texas Children's Hospital, is Feb. 23 at the United Way Community Resource Center for girls ages 10 to 18 and their parents/caregivers with topics including puberty, healthy relationships, personal safety, drugs and addiction, contraception and more. Feb. 23 and 28: Rare Disease Day

Rare Disease Day for patients, parents and caregivers, as well as for health professionals, is Saturday, Feb. 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Health Museum, 1515 Hermann Drive. Sponsored by Baylor and Texas Children’s Hospital, the event will include more than 30 rare disease organizations that will provide information and resources and a talk by Baylor's Dr. Michael Wangler. In addition, information and resources on rare diseases will be available Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Texas Children's Auxiliary Bridge, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Annual compliance education

All Baylor employees and trainees must complete the FY2019 Annual Compliance Education by March 29. This required training focuses on the important issues of outside interests and disclosures, including obligations to disclose financial interests and avoid activities that may adversely impact Baylor's reputation and its mission. Complete the required training through Baylor's online learning system.

Lunar New Year celebration

The Baylor Chinese Student and Scholar Association hosted a campus celebration of the Lunar New Year and Chinese Spring Festival last Saturday evening in Rayzor Lounge. Members of the Baylor community enjoyed food, games and conversation. Happy Year of the Pig!
