Awards and Recognitions

King receives March of Dimes support

Dr. Katherine KingDr. Katherine King, assistant professor of pediatrics – infectious diseases, has received the March of Dimes Basil O’Connor Starter Scholar Award. This award supports young scientists embarking on their independent research careers. King’s research focuses on improving engraftment after bone marrow transplantation and understanding aplastic anemia and hydrops fetalis, or fluid buildup in a fetus and newborn.

Kommagani earns Endocrine Society award

Dr. Ramakrishna Kommagani, postdoctoral associate in molecular and cellular biology, has received the 2015 Early Investigators Award from the Endocrine Society. The award provides support to early career investigators and recognizes their accomplishments in endocrine research. Kommagani will receive the award at the society’s annual awards dinner at ENDO 2015 in San Diego in March.

Winkelmayer elected to kidney disease committee

Dr. Wolfgang WinkelmayerDr. Wolfgang C. Winkelmayer, professor of medicine and the Gordon A. Cain Chair in Nephrology, has been elected to the Executive Committee of Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO), a non-for-profit foundation based in Brussels, Belgium. KDIGO is the leading entity developing clinical practice guidelines for the care of patients with kidney disease. In addition, the foundation organizes KDIGO Controversies Conferences on challenging and fast-evolving topics pertinent to kidney disease. Winkelmayer will serve a three-year term.

Medical Miles Mentor program awarded

The Medical Miles Mentor program, run by the Baylor Medical Student Chapter, received the 2015 John P. McGovern Champion of Health Secondary Award from the Texas Medical Association Foundation. The award recognizes exceptional projects that address urgent public health threats and further the foundation’s mission to help physicians create a healthier future for all Texans. The program was created in 2012 and pairs Baylor student-volunteers with HISD middle schoolers to promote a healthy lifestyle.

OB/GYN grand rounds Feb. 18

Join the OB/GYN department in the TCH auditorium on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 8 a.m. to hear guest speaker Dr. Philip J. Steer. This event is open to all Baylor employees and students. Steer is a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Imperial College London and will be speaking about the evolution of human childbirth and discussing important racial differences affecting reproduction. Faculty Development Day Feb. 27

BCM Faculty Development Day will be held Feb. 27. Two sessions will be offered, one from 8 a.m. to noon and the second from 1 to 5 p.m. Students, residents, postdocs, fellows and faculty from all four schools are invited to participate. Topics covered will include “Effective Teaching Tools in a Time Limited Setting” and “Direct Observation of Your Learners.” In addition, both sessions will include a “Meet the Professors and Mentoring Tips” component during which attendees will have the opportunity to interact in a small-group format with Baylor faculty members, including Drs. Paul Klotman, Alicia Monroe, Mark Kline, Janet Butel, Mary Brandt and Jim McDeavitt, among many others, to discuss teaching and mentoring. CME credit available. Summer Internship Program

The Summer Administrative Internship Program will be offered June 22 to July 31. The program provides students the opportunity to enhance their personal development and their understanding of Baylor by exposing them to the administrative roles that support the clinical, research and education missions of the institution. The internships do not provide opportunities to shadow clinical physicians or conduct research in a lab environment. The internship is unpaid, and there is a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week. Open to rising high school juniors and seniors and college and graduate students. 2015 BCM BeWell Biometric Screenings

Registration for the 2015 BCM BeWell Screenings is now open. Benefit-eligible employees and residents can participate and could receive up to 3,300 Vitality points. Participants who complete their biometric screening and complete their 2015 Vitality Health Review by Nov. 30 will be eligible for a $50 Amazon gift card. View the schedule and register online.

You FIRST will host a co-ed kickball tournament for Baylor employees and students March 21 at the Houston Sportsplex.
