BCM's Brandt a finalist in Weblog Awards

Dr. Mary BrandtMary Brandt, professor of pediatrics and surgery, is a finalist in the seventh annual Medical Weblog Awards. Her blog, "Wellness Rounds" for residents and medical students, is nominated in the Best New Medical Weblog category.

Voting is open for the awards.


Genetics Night at Bellaire High School

Dr. ScagliaBaylor College of Medicine geneticists and biology students at Bellaire High School in Houston will host the third annual "Genetics Night" educational conference on Tuesday, Feb. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Students selected a rare genetic disease to research and will make a presentation to the audience in a conference-like setting. Dr. Fernando Scaglia, associate professor of molecular and human genetics, serves as their mentor.

The event is free and open to the public. It will be held in the library at Bellaire High School, 5100 Maple St., Bellaire, TX, 77401-4999. Parking is available in the school's faculty lot.

TMC Orchestra performances

The TMC Orchestra will perform Sunday, Feb. 20, at 5 p.m. in the Cullen Theater at Wortham Center in downtown Houston. Tickets are $15 or $25 and are available at the door or online.

The orchestra will present "Celebration of Spirit," featuring Abby Simon on piano. The program will include Wagner's "Die Meistersinger Overture," Chopin's "Piano Concerto No. 2" and Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5." The program will be presented again Saturday, Feb. 26, at 3 p.m. at Festival Hill in Round Top, Texas.

The TMC Orchestra is under the director of Libi Lebel and includes many members of the BCM family.

Ostrowski takes on clinic position

Dr. Mary OstrowskiDr. Mary Ostrowski, associate professor in the department of pathology and immunology at BCM, will manage the professional interface between physicians and support staff and the Clinical Pathology Laboratories at the Baylor Clinic, where she will work in the practice of surgical pathology, clinical pathology and cytopathology.

She will also direct the monthly Laboratory QA meeting where ongoing discussions of all metrics of laboratory quality are addressed.
