Despotovic edits textbook

Dr. Jenny DespotovicDr. Jenny Despotovic, associate professor of pediatrics – hematology at Baylor and Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Centers, is the editor of a new textbook, "Immune Hematology: Diagnosis and Management of Autoimmune Cytopenias," to be published this summer by Springer. Despotovic developed all the content and selected the authors for the textbook.

Feb. 21: Panel discussion on intimate partner violence

In conjunction with the February Healthy Relationships awareness campaign, Baylor's Department of Medicine and Title IX and Gender Discrimination programs are offering a panel discussion on intimate partner violence. Join the event on Wednesday, Feb. 21, from noon to 1 p.m. at Ben Taub Hospital, 4th floor conference room, to discuss batter intervention, bystander intervention and a personal story on the dynamics of emotional abuse told by Mrs. Texas 2017, Ann Marie Reigrut, a lieutenant in the United States Coast Guard. CNE and CME will be offered.

Nominations open for Women of Excellence

Baylor will celebrate Women's History Month in March with programs and activities throughout the month, including recognizing our own Women of Excellence. You are encouraged to nominate Baylor faculty, staff, students and trainees who exemplify excellence and Baylor’s other values of respect, integrity, innovation and teamwork. Nominees should represent all areas within Baylor College of Medicine from staff members in Facility Services who keep the College running to world-renowned researchers finding answers to diseases, and from clinicians keeping our community healthy to student, trainee and postdoctoral role models. All nominees must be in good standing with the College; employee nominees must have worked here for at least one year. Find more information online on Baylor values to guide you in your nomination. Please email institutionaldiversity@bcm.edu by Wednesday, Feb. 28, with the name of the woman you would like to nominate and a description between 100 to 300 words of her qualifications for Women of Excellence. Honorees will be recognized at the Women’s History Month lecture on March 30 with Dr. Ruth Simmons, the first African American to lead an Ivy League institution who now serves as president of Prairie View A&M University.

Call for abstracts: CVRI Symposium

The 6th Annual Cardiovascular Research Institute Symposium will be held April 10 to showcase the cardiovascular research accomplishments of the Texas Medical Center through scientific lectures and poster presentations and awards; keynote talks by Dr. Eric Olson of UT Southwestern and John Cooke of Houston Methodist. Abstract guidelines and submission form can be found online.

BeWell news: Schedule your biometric screening

Registration for the 2018 BCM BeWell Biometric Screening is now open. The screening includes physical measurements and a blood draw to determine fasting blood glucose levels, blood pressure, total cholesterol, waist circumference and body mass index. Benefit-eligible employees who complete a BCM BeWell Biometric Screening and their 2018 Vitality Health Review by Nov. 25 will receive an automatic 2,000 BCM BeWell Vitality Points. To view the schedule and instructions on how to register, please visit the BCM BeWell Biometric Screening page. The biometric screening can be completed through BCM BeWell, at an offsite Quest location or by the participant's primary care physician to qualify for the incentive.

College policy updates

The Board of Trustees recently approved several new and revised policies, including: 31.3.02 – Coding Documentation and Audit Standards; 31.3.07 - Teaching Physician Rules: Evaluation & Management Services; 26.1.25 - Office-Based Anesthesia Policy; 26.1.26 - Event and Complaint Reporting Policy. Minor modifications were made to additional policies. See the full list of policy updates from Dec. 30.

Tickets available for Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

Got your rodeo tickets yet?
