Huffington Distinguished Lecture Jan. 16

Dr. Elizabeth Helen BlackburnThe Huffington Center on Aging will present the Roy M. Huffington Distinguished Lecture Jan. 16 at noon in Cullen Auditorium, featuring Nobel Laureate Dr. Elizabeth Helen Blackburn. An endowed chair in biology and physiology at the University of California – San Francisco, Blackburn will speak on "Roles of Telomeres and Telomerase in Disease and Health." The lecture will be followed by a 1 p.m. poster session and reception.

Vernon Knight Lecture held

Dr. Wehrens and Dr. McNallyThe third annual Dr. Vernon Knight Lecture was held last month with guest speaker Dr. Elizabeth McNally, professor of medicine and human genetics at the University of Chicago Medicine. Her lecture, "Genetic Modifiers of Inherited Myopathies," focused on her latest research on the genetics of heart disease. Dr. Knight was not able to attend this year's lecture. Dr. Xander Wehrens, director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute and professor of medicine at BCM, hosted the event and presented McNally with a plaque honoring her as a Knight lecturer. McNally, a physician/scientist, is also the director of the Institute for Cardiovascular Research and the director for the Cardiovascular Genetics Clinics at UCM.

Faculty and staff of the quarter nominations

Nominations for the faculty and staff of the quarter recognition program are being accepted through Friday, Jan. 11. The program identifies and honors current faculty and staff in the clinical, research, education and central administration areas who make exceptional contributions to BCM by providing outstanding service. Employees are encouraged to nominate colleagues who deserve this special acknowledgement. Employees can also submit an idea for "Best Suggestion." Nominations can be made online. Fitness discounts offered by BCM

If your New Year's resolutions include improving your diet and fitness, then consider making use of discounts offered by BCM. Discounts are offered to area gyms, including 24 Hour Fitness, LA Fitness and the UT Health Science Center Recreation Center. The BCM gym is also conveniently located and affordable for employees.
