Metelitsa awarded grant for immunotherapy research

Dr. Leonid MetelitsaDr. Leonid Metelitsa, professor of pediatrics at Baylor and Texas Children’s Cancer Center and a member of the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy, is one of the inaugural recipients of a Bio-therapeutics Impact Award from the nonprofit organization Alex’s Lemonade Stand. The three-year, $1.5 million award supports his project to develop and clinically test an immunotherapy treatment for neuroblastoma, one of the most common solid tumors in children. The grant is the largest funding given by the foundation.

Reception honoring Sawaya Jan. 8

The Baylor community is invited to a reception for Dr. Raymond Sawaya honoring his 10 years of leadership and service as the chair of the department of neurosurgery. It will be held Thursday, Jan. 8, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the DeBakey/Alkek Lobby. Sawaya is returning full time to MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he is chair of neurosurgery and director of the Brain Tumor Center.

Register for Cancer Center Symposium

Registration is open through Jan. 9 for the Dan L Duncan Cancer Center Symposium: Focus on Translation and Training. The symposium will be held Jan. 26 in MD Anderson’s Onstead Auditorium. They keynote speaker is Dr. Patricia Ganz of UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, a medical oncologist and director of cancer prevention and control research and of the patients and survivors program. Global Health Symposium

Save the date for the Baylor Global Health Symposium, set for Jan. 22 in Rayzor Lounge and Cullen Auditorium. The symposium will include poster presentations by students, residents and fellows who received funding through the Baylor Global Innovation Center and presentations by faculty recipients of global health pilot project grants. The Distinguished Lecture will feature Dr. Michael Merson, founding director of the Duke Global Health Institute. See the full schedule online.

Deal named medical director at Ben Taub EC

Dr. Nathan DealDr. Nathan Deal, assistant professor of medicine – emergency medicine, has been named the new medical director of the emergency center at Ben Taub Hospital. He is a BCM alumnus and trained in emergency medicine at the University of Chicago. He has served as president of Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association, an organization with more than 10,000 members. He was the section’s first administrative fellow and previously served as associate medical director of the emergency center.
