SWAT medical team trains at BCM
March 1, 2013
Valentine's Day at Baylor College of Medicine is not all about flowers and chocolates. For the second year in a row on Feb. 14, the surgical training group at BCM welcomed Dr. David Persse, the city's EMS director, and the city's Tactical Medical Team for an exercise in simulating emergency response during stressful situations.
The Tactical Medical Team is called on to accompany the Houston Police SWAT team during high-risk encounters. Team members are specially trained and have knowledge of SWAT and police department operations.
Persse, who is also professor of emergency medicine at BCM, and Dr. Brad Scott, associate professor of surgery at BCM, created a series of scenarios in which the responders practiced emergency medical techniques while encountering sounds of gunfire, people screaming, lights out and other similar challenges.
The training took place in BCM's surgical training labs located on the main campus.
