Student Corner: Jasdeep Mangat
Sept. 1, 2012
- Third-year medical student
Mangat is stepping aside from his medical studies at BCM for one year to pursue a Fulbright-Nehru Student Research Grant in India. He will be working at Pingalwara Charitable Society in Amritsar, Punjab, examining the way different anthropological variables, from health care access to linguistics, influence how individuals with mental illness experiences their illness and receive treatment.
Starting this August, Mangat travelled to Chandigarh to learn Punjabi, a dialect of Hindi, under a Critical Language Enhancement Award. He will begin his work in Amritsar in November.
While at BCM, he started the CHEF (Choosing Healthy, Eating Fresh) elective, in which second-year medical students take cooking lessons from a well-known Houston-area chef in order to learn to care for themselves as well as advise their patients on eating healthy. Read more about CHEF.
