Student Corner: Kristy Hamilton and Rachel Solnick
Oct. 1, 2012
- Medical students
Solnick and Hamilton, second and third-year medical students, respectively, are the organizers of the BCM Wellness 5K Race/Walk, an event that brings together the Houston community through fitness. They have worked tirelessly for months to plan all of the details of the race, from sponsorship to vendors to the race route itself.
The event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 8:30 a.m. with a costume contest starting at 8 a.m. The race will start at BCM's main campus and take a scenic route along Brays Bayou and through the Texas Medical Center.
The event will benefit Recipe for Success and the BCM Wellness Education Fund. Recipe for Success, a non-profit organization based in Houston, promotes healthy eating and nutrition to children in the community. The BCM Wellness Education Fund provides seed funding for student-initiated community health projects.
Post-race activities will take place in the McGovern Commons of the Texas Medical Center, 6550 Bertner Ave., and will include a kid's 1k race at 9:30 a.m. and an awards ceremony with food, music and prizes.
