BCM students and faculty roll up their sleeves for a good cause
July 1, 2012
BCM will partner with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center for a blood drive July 17 and 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge.
Every day, the Blood Center must collect 1,000 donations to meet patient needs in Harris and surrounding counties. By hosting regular blood drives throughout the year, BCM students, faculty and staff help ensure that a healthy blood supply is always available.
A very successful two-day blood drive was held May 2 and 3, collecting a grand total of 63 units for patients in the local community.
A few BCM donors have already achieved Commit for Life gold-level status this year, and two BCM donors recently surpassed the one-gallon donation mark! Those who donate and join the Blood Center's Commit for Life program will earn double points for their July donation as part of the Blood Center's 2D promotion. The Commit for Life program encourages donors to give at least once a quarter and rewards donors with points for each donation, which can be redeemed in the online Commit for Life Store.
During the blood drive, the Gulf Coast Marrow Donor Program also registered 40 potential donors for Be The Match registry, the world's largest listing of potential marrow donors.
Special thanks to Mercedes Montalvo for promoting the drive through the Latino Medical Student Association and to blood drive chairperson Gail Sparks in the Office of Communications for making this such a successful drive.
