Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center

It may not be October – the official Breast Cancer Awareness month – but the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center at BCM will be participating in a number of community breast cancer events in the months leading up to it.

On Aug. 6, the breast center will host a booth at the first-ever Pink Street festival, to be held in conjunction with the White Linen Night in the Heights, a popular neighborhood-wide shopping event attended by more than 50,000 people. Pink Street will feature various grassroots and well-known breast cancer awareness and survivor groups. The Smith Breast Center booth will be giving out pink popcorn, selling custom-made jewelry and handing out educational information about early detection. The event is open to the public. The Pink Street will reside on White Oak between Oxford and Columbia. For more information visit

Next up, the Smith Breast Center will serve as an official sponsor of Tour de Pink Sept. 18 at Prairie View A&M University. The cycling event raises money for the Pink Ribbons Project to fight breast cancer through awareness and education programs and the support of proper screening for the medically underserved.

BCM also has an official Tour de Pink team. Team members can sign up to ride one of the 12-, 23-, 34-, 47-, 63-, 80- and 100-mile routes. To sign up to ride, visit Tour de Pink 2011. Click on "Join an existing team" and search for "Baylor College of Medicine." BCM has had one of the largest teams since the event's inception seven years ago.

The Smith Breast Center center will also host a Pit Stop on the 80- and 100-mile routes. Volunteers are needed to help provide support to the more than 200 riders expected to choose these longer routes. For more information on volunteering, contact Glenna Picton at or 713-798-7973. Volunteers would need to arrive at the Pit Stop location around 7:15 a.m. on Sept. 18. They can expect to stay about two hours.

Finally, to officially kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the breast center will be participating in the Houston Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Oct. 1. In addition to being an official sponsor, the Smith Breast Center will be hosting a team. The Komen race is a 5k race (about 3 miles). Anyone running on the team can sign up for the family fun walk, competitive race and non-competitive race. To sign up for by visiting the Komen Race website. Search for the Baylor College of Medicine – Smith Breast Center team and follow the instructions on how to join.
