Summer good time to catch up on kids' routine health check-ups
Youngsters may not be thinking about back-to-school check-ups just yet (or ever!) but their parents might want to. A pediatrician from Baylor College of Medicine suggested mid-summer to get routine health checks out of the way before the back-to-school rush.
Dr. Jan Drutz, professor of pediatrics at BCM, said mid-summer is a great time to start considering what health checks the child should have and scheduling appointments.
Drutz suggested parents should schedule:
- Routine well child/pre-sports exam, if the child has not had one within the past 6 months
- Routine dental exam, if not performed within the past 6 months
- Thorough review of a child's immunization record and appropriate administration of deficient vaccine doses, as needed
- Vision and hearing screenings
Additionally, summer is a good time for parents to review safety tips with their children, especially for those riding their bikes or walking to school, he said.
