New leadership positions for medical, graduate schools announced

Baylor College of Medicine has announced new leadership positions for the medical school and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

Dr. Mary L. Brandt, professor of surgery, pediatrics and medical ethics, has been named associate dean of student affairs. Brandt will take the place of Dr. Donald Donovan, who served as associate dean of student affairs for 17 years. Donovan will focus his attention on his role as interim chair of the department of otolaryngology.

Other new appointments for the medical school include Dr. Lloyd Michael, professor of medicine, named interim senior associate dean of admissions; Dr. Karen Johnson, associate professor of pediatrics, named associate dean of admissions; and Dr. Toi Harris, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, named assistant dean of student affairs and diversity.

Dr. William R. Brinkley retired from his position as dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and has been named dean emeritus. Dr. Hiram F. (Gil) Gilbert, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, has been appointed dean of the graduate school while a national search is conducted.

Other new appointments for the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences include Dr. Gayle Slaughter, associate professor of molecular and cellular biology, named senior associate dean for graduate studies and diversity; Dr. Scott Basinger, associate professor of ophthalmology and neuroscience, named ombudsman for graduate students and postdoctorals; Dr. Gad Shaulsky, professor of molecular and human genetics, named assistant dean of admissions; Dr. Richard Sifers, professor of pathology & immunology, molecular and cellular biology and molecular physiology and biophysics, named assistant dean for post-doctoral research and career development; and Dr. Carolyn Smith, associate professor of molecular and cellular biology, named assistant dean for curriculum.
