Friends dinner supports heart disease, stroke research at BCM

The Friends for the Prevention of Heart Disease and Stroke are gearing up to host their annual Friends Dinner benefiting the Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention at Baylor College of Medicine and The Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center Center.

The fundraising event will be held Tuesday, Oct. 9 at the River Oaks Country Club and will honor Paul and Penny Loyd for their generous dedication to community service. In addition, Maria Ballantyne will receive the Friends Legacy Award in recognition of her longtime support of the Friends group.

This year a new program will be introduced called “Dueling Doctors: Fact or Myth?” that will feature interactive discussion and audience participation.

The "dueling doctors" include:

Dr. Christie Ballantyne, professor of medicine, section chief of cardiology and cardiovascular research in the department of medicine, director of the Maria and Alando J. Ballantyne Atherosclerosis Clinical Research Laboratory at BCM and director of the Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention at the Methodist DeBakey Heart Center and co-director of the Lipid Metabolism and Atherosclerosis Clinic at The Methodist Hospital.

Dr. Peter Jones, associate professor, Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention at the Methodist DeBakey Heart Center and Medical Director of the Medical Weight Management Program at Methodist.

Dr. Vijay Nambi, assistant professor of medicine—cardiology at BCM and staff cardiologist at Ben Taub General Hospital.

Dr. Salim Virani, assistant professor of medicine—cardiology at BCM and staff cardiologist at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Dr. Addison Taylor, professor of medicine, pharmacology, and molecular physiology and biophysics and chief of the division of hypertension and clinical pharmacology and associate dean for clinical research at BCM.

Dr. James Pool, professor of medicine and pharmacology, director of the Hypertension and Clinical Pharmacology Research Clinic and academic chair of the James L. Pool Endowed Chair in clinical pharmacology division of hypertension and clinical pharmacology department of medicine.
