Welcome
It is a great pleasure to welcome you to this the First Neurocritical Research Conference and to Houston. The field of neurocritical care is rapidly maturing into a major player in clinical medicine. This discipline has evolved from a primary focus on the post-operative care of neurosurgical patients to the broader resuscitation of patients with massive brain insults. This conference intends to bridge the gap between the daily clinical care and the research ideas that will promote improved outcomes. The overall goal of this interdisciplinary scientific symposium is to bring together scientists and physicians from diverse fields with a common interest in understanding and advancing research in neurocritical care. The symposium is unique in that it will provide a forum for presenting and discussing the latest advances in clinical trial design, research tools, and research priorities in the field of neurocritical care. The need for the creation of a neurocritical care research network will also be addressed to facilitate collaboration and patient enrollment in clinical trials. Funding has been provided by NINDS (1R13NS065494-01, P.I. JI Suarez), St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston, and the Integra Foundation.
At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to: 1) understand the importance and opportunities for research in neurocritical care diseases; 2) discuss recent scientific advances related to clinical trial design and research tools that will have an impact on neurocritical care research; 3) determine the future directions of research of neurocritical care diseases; and 4) establish a collaborative network in neurocritical care research.
We are very excited to have you here with us. Your participation will be vital to the overall success of this symposium. We strongly encourage you to actively participate in all the interactive sessions. We will be videotaping the entire meeting and its content will be posted in the Neurocritical Care Society website for public view as soon as technically feasible. In addition the Organizing Committee and the invited speakers have prepared draft summary statements of the topics to be discussed with the goal of editing their contents during breakout discussions at the end of each session. The final manuscripts will be published in Neurocritical Care.
