Diagnostic Criteria for Hyaline Membrane Disease

 

Infants> 1500 Grams

 

1.     Spontaneously breathing infant requires > 50% oxygen in the first day of life and has a history compatible with HMD. Such patients are candidates for CPAP by endotracheal tube and treatment with rescue surfactant.

2.     Infants requiring IPPV and with a PaO2/PAO2 ratio <0.22 (FiO2>35%) qualify for diagnosis of HMD and rescue surfactant treatment.

3.     Negative blood culture (if done).

Infants <1500 Grams

 

1.     Infant is on IPPV. Prior to or following treatment with surfactant, the PaO2/PAO2 ratio is <0.22 (FiO2>35%) for more than twelve hours.

2.     Infants treated with CPAP because of oxygen requirement >50% meet diagnostic criteria for HMD and also qualify for rescue surfactant treatment.

3.     Negative blood culture (if done).
