Our focus is on promoting and maintaining health, and we encourage women and their families to be informed and actively involved in this process. We provide full-scope individualized care for healthy women, including family planning or child spacing techniques, annual physical exams and pap smears, as well as treatment for minor gynecologic conditions.

Our service is:

  • Focused on complete prenatal and birth care emphasizing a safe and emotionally satisfying experience
  • Managed and staffed by certified nurse-midwives
  • Manned by faculty or staff of Baylor College of Medicine
  • Available in a variety of locations
  • Affiliated with Ben Taub Hospital, which also provides a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery for any infants requiring that level of care

Physician consultation and collaborative management are available if needed.

Baylor College of Medicine midwives also offer group prenatal care known as Centering Pregnancy as an option to women in many of our clinics.

What Is a Nurse-Midwife?

The practice of midwifery is based upon the belief that every childbearing family has the right to a safe, satisfying experience with respect for human dignity and worth, for variety in cultural forms, and for the parent's right to self-determination.

Nurse midwifery practice is the management of women's primary health care needs. It focuses on pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, newborn care, family planning, and gynecological needs of women of all ages.

Working within the system that provides for physician consultation, collaboration, and referral, CNM's practice according to the standards of the American College of Nurse-Midwives. The practice of nurse-midwifery is officially recognized by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Reimbursement for CNM care is provided by CHAMPUS, Medicaid, the Rural Health Clinic Services Act, private insurance companies, PPOs, and HMOs throughout Texas and the United States.

Certified Nurse-Midwives

  • Nurse-midwives provide high-quality, hands-on healthcare for women.
  • A nurse-midwife is educated to support and enhance a woman's normal life processes, recognize and manage problems, and, if needed, refer clients to a healthcare provider for further specialized care.
  • Nurse-midwives provide care that respects educates and empowers women.
  • A certified nurse-midwife is a professional midwife educated in the two disciplines of nursing and midwifery, and who possesses evidence of certification according to the requirements of the American College of Nurse-Midwives.
