Built in 1991, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center is one of the most comprehensive patient care complexes in the VA system. Located on a 118-acre campus within the Texas Medical Center, the new state-of-the-art facility provides care to veterans from the Texas regional area and to patients referred from across the nation.

Adult Genetics Clinics at VA Medical Center

Patients who are 18 years or older, who have a known diagnosis of genetic disease or need evaluation for genetic diagnosis of adult-onset can be seen at the adult genetics clinic located in the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. The clinic physicians will see patients with conditions such as Marfan syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, neurofibromatosis, familial cancer syndromes such as hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, Lynch syndrome, as well as, chromosomal conditions such as Turner syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome, Williams syndrome, etc. 

A detailed family history is taken along with a regular medical exam which includes an interview as well as a physical exam. Genetic testing is done when appropriate and patients and families are counseled in depth.

Neurogenetics Clinic at VA Medical Center

Content

The Neurogenetics Clinic located at Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center provides genetic evaluation and counseling for patients with a variety of inherited disorders that primarily affect the nervous system, with special emphasis on neurodegenerative or metabolic diseases.

Examples of these diseases include movement disorders, spinocerebellar ataxia, hereditary spastic paraplegia, dementia, mitochondrial disorders, lysosomal storage diseases, Wilson’s disease, hereditary muscle and nerve diseases, or other rare or ultra-rare diseases of the nervous system with known or suspected genetic basis.

Patients may be referred for diagnostic evaluation, advanced diagnostic testing and genetic counseling. An adult neurologist with additional training in medical genetics staffs the clinic on the first Wednesday of each month from 8 a.m. to noon in the PrimeCare Specialty Clinic area on the first floor of the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center.

The Neurogenetics Clinic is fully integrated with the Adult Genetics Clinic, where internists trained in medical genetics are available for consultation of medical problems outside the nervous system.
