The Neurogenetics Clinic located at Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center provides genetic evaluation and counseling for patients with a variety of inherited disorders that primarily affect the nervous system, with special emphasis on neurodegenerative or metabolic diseases.
Examples of these diseases include movement disorders, spinocerebellar ataxia, hereditary spastic paraplegia, dementia, mitochondrial disorders, lysosomal storage diseases, Wilson’s disease, hereditary muscle and nerve diseases, or other rare or ultra-rare diseases of the nervous system with known or suspected genetic basis.
Patients may be referred for diagnostic evaluation, advanced diagnostic testing and genetic counseling. An adult neurologist with additional training in medical genetics staffs the clinic on the first Wednesday of each month from 8 a.m. to noon in the PrimeCare Specialty Clinic area on the first floor of the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center.
The Neurogenetics Clinic is fully integrated with the Adult Genetics Clinic, where internists trained in medical genetics are available for consultation of medical problems outside the nervous system.
- Clinic Hours: First Wednesday of each month, 8 a.m. – 12 noon
