Pilot Study - Shared Decision Making Tool (H-39242)
Description
Shared Decision Making and How It Impacts Patient Understanding: Using an Interactive Knee Osteoarthritis App Based on a Cost Model to Generate Patient Shared Decision Making Tool
Musculoskeletal conditions increasingly impact all segments of the population, but particularly members of the African American and Latino/Hispanic communities. One important way to decrease musculoskeletal health disparities is to raise awareness of their impact on chronic disease management and quality of life. Movement is Life (MiL) is a multidisciplinary coalition seeking to decrease musculoskeletal health disparities among women and racial/ethnic minorities. MiL created an interactive Patient Shared Decision Making (SDM) tool – culturally sensitive education material that is customized to a specific patient. Baylor College of Medicine was invited by MiL to serve as one of six sites to test the SDM tool in a multicenter pilot study.
Purpose
This pilot study aims to determine if the Shared Decision Making (SDM) tool results in improved patient understanding compared to a control group.
Eligibility
The physician will refer a patient to the clinical study coordinator if they fit the following criteria:
- Aged 45 to 64 years
- Mild to moderate knee pain consistent with a diagnosis of osteoarthritis
- Self-identified as African American and/or Hispanic
- At least one of the following comorbidities – obesity (BMI ≥ 30, ≤ 45); hypertension; diabetes
Procedures
The clinical study coordinator will meet with the patient, review the relevant study information, and issue an IRB-approved Informed Consent. After the patient has provided his/her consent, the clinical study coordinator will issue a series of questionnaires to the patient. The patient will be reimbursed with a $20 gift card for time/travel. The clinical study coordinator will schedule a one-month follow-up meeting. During that appointment, the clinical study coordinator will conduct a 15-minute discussion in person using the One-Month Follow-Up Survey. The patient will be reimbursed with a $20 gift card for time/travel.
