Medtronic - Fall Prevention in Hospitalized Patients (H-38053)

The reported rate of falls in acute care hospitals ranges from 1.3 to 8.9 per 1,000 bed-days. Falls occur frequently and can have serious physical and psychological consequences. Between 30 and 50 percent of in-facility falls result in injuries. Falls are associated with increased healthcare use, including increased length of stay and higher rates of discharge from hospitals into long-term care facilities.

The aim of the present study is to use a validated wearable technology (Bioharness3, Zephyr Technology, Annapolis, Maryland) for fall risk assessment and prevention in hospitalized patients. The use of wearable sensors for monitoring of physical activity provides an objective way to relate the falls and risk of fall to activities of daily living in the hospital. By studying the relation between extracted parameters by a custom algorithm developed in our team (e.g. stress assessment and sleep quality) and finding its association with validated risk of fall assessment (e.g. Hendrich Fall Risk Model) and clinical data related to falling, we plan to translate our knowledge about objective assessment of fall risk to a software for prediction of fall.

Inclusion Criteria: The study population will consist of ambulatory patients who are 18 years old or older.

Exclusion Criteria: Patients younger than 18 and patients suffering from diagnosed dementia or confirmed brain metastatic disease will be excluded.
