Urinary Tract Infection

Master
Content

One of the problems most commonly treated by urologists is urinary tract infection or UTI. These infections, which can occur in both upper and lower urinary tracts, are found most often in women.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include flank pain, high fever, frequent urination, incontinence, pain or burning when urinating, malodorous urine, or blood in the urine.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is achieved with physical examination and laboratory analysis of a urine sample.

Treatment

Treatment usually consists of antibiotics. The choice of medicine depends on the patient's general health and the bacteria found in a urine test. Symptoms of these infections usually disappear within a few days after treatment begins. Recurrent infections may require a longer course of antibiotic treatment.
