Collagen and Radiesse, Juvederm Injectable Gel

Collagen is a naturally occurring protein that provides volume to the second layer of skin. Collagen injections counteract the effects of gravity forces, sun exposure and years of facial muscle movement (smiling, chewing and squinting, which produce lines and creases) by filling in sunken areas and smoothing lines, creating a rejuvenated appearance. Although collagen injections improve severe wrinkles or deep folds, they cannot eliminate them. As a result, the procedure is often combined with facial resurfacing or other rejuvenation procedures for a more satisfactory and longer-lasting result.

Formerly known as Radiance, Radiesse™ is a synthetic injectable filler that reduces wrinkles and creases. Composed of microspheres of calcium hydroxyapatite in a biocompatible gel, Radiesse is made from the same minerals found in bone, so it carries minimal risk of allergic reaction. Radiesse can be used on many areas of the body, but the most effective areas to treat are the lips, nasolabial folds (from the root of the nose to the corner of the mouth), wrinkles around the mouth, and depressed scars.

Treatment typically takes 30 minutes to an hour and requires local anesthetic. Side effects such as swelling or bruising are minimal and fade within a few days. Results are visible immediately and can last up to two years.
