Baylor Heart Clinic

General Cardiology

Our general cardiology specialists have the expertise to treat a variety of cardiac conditions.

The goal at Baylor Heart Clinic is to help in the prevention of cardiac problems and the effective treatment of coexisting cardiac issues. Our general cardiology specialists have the expertise to treat various cardiac conditions.

Sleep Disorders and Obesity. Sleep apnea increases the risks of developing high blood pressure (hypertension) and also makes it difficult to control high blood pressure. Blood vessels tend to be stiffer when sleep apnea is present and the heart relaxation capability tends to be impaired. It is commonly present in patients who have cardiac problems and is associated with an increased mortality.

Obesity increases the risk of high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, diabetes, sleep apnea, and heart failure.

Preoperative Evaluation. Preoperative evaluations at Baylor Heart provide rapid assessment of risk, the need for additional tests and therapy before elective surgical procedures. Patients are seen within 24 hours and additional imaging tests, such as echocardiogram and stress tests are done on site in the clinic.

Preventive Cardiology. The complications of atherosclerosis remain the major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. However, a significant reduction in age-adjusted cardiovascular mortality has occurred over the past several decades. The underlying causes of coronary disease are complex and multifactorial. However, a number of the clinical conditions which increased the risk for the initiation and progression of coronary disease are identifiable and can be modified. Clinical trials have demonstrated that identification and control of elevated cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, smoking and obesity significantly reduced the risk for the development of atherosclerosis. The Baylor Heart Clinic preventive cardiology program is dedicated to the identification of individuals at risk for the development of coronary disease and initiating preventive therapy prior to the onset of heart attack or stroke. Advanced lipid and other laboratory evaluations, cardiovascular imaging (echocardiography, nuclear stress testing, noninvasive coronary imaging cardiac MRI, etc.), dietary and nutrition therapy, are available and the personnel in the clinic are dedicated to the reduction of cardiovascular risk.

Cardiovascular Genetics. Baylor Heart provides for clinical and genetic evaluation of both common and rare cardiovascular diseases like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The clinic provides for comprehensive cardiovascular evaluation and management in addition to extensive genetic testing and counseling for patients and family members.
