Mission: Possible Frequently Asked Questions
Is my gift tax-deductible?
Yes, your gift is tax-deductible to the extent allowable by law. Gifts made via payroll donations are deducted after taxes; therefore, donors may choose to itemize these donations on their tax returns. Use your last paystub or earnings statement as your receipt.
I heard that Baylor College of Medicine has entered joint venture negotiations with a potential clinical partner. Why do you still need my support for the BCM Medical Center?
A joint venture is not a merger but a partnership with separate responsibilities. The College will continue to be responsible for funding its mission areas, including translational research and medical training and recruitment. Philanthropy is vital to the College and to our future growth.
In fact, gifts in support of the medical center have made it an attractive and important asset in our discussions with potential partners. The BCM Medical Center at the McNair Campus will be the newest hospital in the Texas Medical Center and with a partner, it will be able to grow faster and offer more services, making your gift an even better investment in the future of Houston.
Why should I support Baylor College of Medicine? Isn’t my employment enough?
Baylor College of Medicine is a nonprofit organization and relies on philanthropic support for its existence, just like your church or favorite charity. Philanthropy fulfills our mission of patient care, research, education and community service and provides all of us the resources needed to maintain Baylor’s standard of excellence. It is hard to ask the community to support us if we don’t believe in our mission enough to invest in ourselves.
In making their funding decisions, many individual donors and local and national foundations consider employee giving as a measure of institutional commitment. A strong campaign will demonstrate our united faith in the importance of our work.
Can I direct my gift to my own department or research program?
You may direct philanthropy to any department or research program at Baylor College of Medicine. However, in order to count toward the Mission: Possible campaign, gifts must be designated to the BCM Medical Center. A minimum paid gift of $10 is required to be counted.
How do I make a gift?
There are many ways to make a gift to the College. You can make your gift by payroll deduction, check, credit or debit card, appreciated securities and bonds, bequests and life insurance.
If you have questions about making your gift, please contact the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs at 713-798-4714.
Can I give jointly with my spouse or partner?
Of course. It is your choice whether to make your gift as an individual or a couple. Additionally, your spouse/partner may work for or be a retiree from a company that matches philanthropic gifts made by their employees. Check with the human resources department of his/her company to see if you may be able to double your gift to Baylor College of Medicine.
