Student Physicians for Social Responsibility is a new student organization focused around bringing awareness and change to environmental health related issues. SPSR will invite speakers to educate students on environmental impacts on health, as well as how the healthcare sector plays a role in climate change, and what we can do to be advocates for change. Additionally we have diverse opportunities to be involved in advocacy such as writing letters to the editor urging action on environmental responsibility, crafting a planetary health report card for BCM and directly speaking with legislators in support of environmental safety bills. The U.S. health care sector accounts for 10% of annual greenhouse gas emissions in the United States and if the estimated emissions of the U.S. health care sector were itself a country, it would be the 13th largest emitter in the world. We aim to be a part of the change that will reduce environmental impacts on health, as well as the healthcare sector’s impact on the environment.
