Accountability Society

Item Definition

The Accountability Society is a short (20-30 minutes) weekly meeting of students who want to set goals and be held accountable to them. Goals can be anything, not just academics. Each meeting we share progress on goals from the last week and set goals for the week ahead. Zoom and in-person meetings are available. Join for increased accountability, a supportive peer group and reach your goals!

Anatomy Dissection and Education Group

Item Definition

The Anatomy Dissection and Education Group strives to promote interest and knowledge in anatomy by increasing educational opportunities for students in and out of the lab. Through peer-led academic tutoring programs, such as Anatomy Buddies, we not only give upper class students the opportunity to reinforce their own anatomy knowledge in lab, but we also pass down tips and tricks to first-year students to help them succeed on their exams and in future clinical practice. Furthermore, we connect with physicians in various fields to provide educational opportunities to students which show the importance of anatomy in every area of medicine.

Art and Music in Patient Care

Item Definition

The mission of Art and Music in Patient Care group is to amplify the therapeutic benefits of music and the arts for patients, residents and medical students through a program that connects students’ artistic talents with patients throughout the Texas Medical Center. By providing avenues for medical students to interact with patients through music and art, we aim to develop a passion for the arts, serve as an outlet for individual expression and creativity and promote stronger connections between students, residents and patients. In this way, we hope to add a more individualized and meaningful dimension to the patient-practitioner relationship.

The Badminton Club at Baylor College of Medicine is a student-run organization dedicated to providing a fun environment for both experienced and beginner players to play games and learn about the sport of badminton. Students can get a great workout at regular, weekly practices held at BCM Gym and the chance to meet students from other classes and programs at Baylor.

We are a group of medical students poised to reinvigorate the relationship between food and the field of medicine. Our overarching goal is to increase the knowledge and accessibility of healthy, fresh food for medical students, patients and healthcare professionals alike through two key efforts: education and community involvement.

The Climbing & Outdoor Adventure Group encourages a well-balanced lifestyle amongst BCM students by promoting regular rock-climbing socials at local gyms (COAG members get climbing discounts!) and organizing outdoor adventures in Houston and beyond (hiking, outdoor climbing, camping). We also have outdoor climbing gear that's free for COAG members to borrow!

Lines at Baylor College of Medicine brings together a group of like minded individuals who have a passion for dance, yoga and pilates to foster physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. We aim to promote wellness and creative expression through movement by arranging group classes at local studios, bringing in guest speakers and hosting volunteer opportunities within the community by giving student-run workshops to promote wellness. Narrative Medicine Interest Group

Item Definition

Narrative Medicine aims to bring skills of close reading, close listening and creativity from the humanities and the arts in order to improve the experience of all those who give and/or receive healthcare. Our specific aim is to provide a venue for students to continue engaging with, practicing and building narrative medicine skills and connect them to like-minded individuals and community resources. Over time we aim to foster a culture of narrative medicine, one of empathy, compassion, humanism, imagination and wellbeing at Baylor, spanning all levels of training. We aim to provide a space in which members can reflect on their clinical and personal experiences and build deeper, meaningful relationships through creative work.

Space Medicine Interest Group

Item Definition

The Space Medicine Interest Group at Baylor College of Medicine was created to facilitate student interest in aerospace medicine. SMIG serves as a source for aerospace medicine discussion, research and mentorship. We host guest lecturers from BCM's Center for Space Medicine and NASA's Johnson Space Center, home of human spaceflight operations. We also collaborate with McGovern Medical School's interest group and the Aerospace Medical Association's AMSRO student/resident group.

Sports Medicine Interest Group

Item Definition

If you’re someone who loves sports and wants to work in a field with athletes, this is the group for you! Even if you just want to learn more about the different fields of sports medicine, we’ll take a look at the various routes that are available, from your traditional sports medicine to new fields like sports neurology or cardiology, as well as orthopedic sports medicine. We also want to give students the chance to volunteer at events and find research opportunities with faculty at BCM. Here’s another look at some of the events we’ll be having: 

  • Meetings/lectures from different BCM Sports Medicine faculty
  • Workshops to work on different sports medicine skills, such as the MSK exam
  • Opportunities to be involved in volunteer events, shadowing physicians at games and chances to be involved in research

Student Rounds

Item Definition

Student Rounds exposes pre-clinical students to the process of clinical decision making early in their training through "Morning Report" style cases. Our meetings allow students to gain experience creating a differential diagnosis, assessment and plan prior to clinical rotations. Each session will focus on a different core specialty (Internal Medicine, Surgery, OB/GYN and more) to expose students to the different approaches each specialty has to decision making. We hope to accomplish our goals in an environment that encourages active participation and learning. Through these sessions, we aim to ease the transition from pre-clinical student to clinical student.

Item Definition

The Swim Club at Baylor College of Medicine provides regularly scheduled opportunities to exercise and maintain personal health. We hold workouts three times each week at the UT-Health gym near the medical center and encourage all experience levels to join. We aim to help students relieve stress and raise motivation for the rest of their day while also giving an opportunity to meet others from outside each class and program at Baylor.

The Tennis Club at Baylor College of Medicine provides opportunities for tennis enthusiasts to play the sport they love with fellow students, residents and faculty members. Through the gauntlet of pushing our bodies to the limit to dig just one more ball, or smash through a block, we at the Volleyball Club work to harness the stress and fatigue that can come with medical school to create a fun, inclusive environment where anyone can join in to play America’s favorite pastime. With weekly open play, groups participating in tournaments in the greater Houston area and a mix of medical students of all years and BCM employees and residents joining in, BCMVC offers a little something for everyone. Give yourself a little pass from studies and set yourself up for some fun spiking!

WMIG facilitates medical student training and education in the management of illnesses and injuries associated with extreme and resource-limited environments. Anatomy and Dissection Education Group

Item Definition

The mission of the Anatomy and Dissection Education Group is to teach and instruct incoming MS1s how to study anatomy, to foster interest and familiarize students with more advanced anatomic structures, relationships, and eponyms encountered in the operating room and to connect the relevance of anatomy to the wide array of specialties within medicine. The goal will be to create a means by which students can learn from their peers in a low-stress environment and build connections with the faculty at Baylor College of Medicine.

The purpose of the Tennis Club at BCM Temple will be to provide a space for student tennis players to connect and organize tennis events together. The organization’s mission will be to help BCM students explore tennis interests.
