Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center to establish a Center of Excellence in Primary Care Education

HOUSTON – (May 19, 2015) – The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center was awarded funding by the VA Office of Academic Affiliations to establish a Houston Center of Excellence in Primary Care Education. MEDVAMC is one of two new sites competitively selected to join the five existing Centers of Excellence nationwide.

The goal of this flagship program from the OAA is to educate interprofessional trainees from medicine, mental health, undergraduate nursing, advanced practice nursing, pharmacy, and other health professions to deliver high quality, patient-centered, team-based primary care.

The proposal, led by LeChauncy Woodard, M.D., MPH, center director, and Jane Anderson, Ph.D., RN, FNP-BC, center co-director, was a collaborative effort between the MEDVAMC, Baylor College of Medicine, and the Center for Innovations in Quality, Safety, and Effectiveness. The proposal was also developed in partnership with other academic affiliates of the MEDVAMC and BCM, including The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Texas Women’s University, the University of Houston, and Texas Southern University.
