Applicants must have a position at Baylor College of Medicine. The program is primarily designed for senior sub-specialty fellows and junior faculty.
All applicants are expected to designate a general area of research specialization before entering the program. A mentor should be selected to guide the scholar through the program, and a short research proposal must be submitted as part of the application package.
You may join the program for just one year and receive a Certificate of Added Qualification, or for two or more years for an M.S. or Ph.D. degree from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. The first year is identical for all programs.
Ph.D. or M.S. Degree Applicants
Ph.D. or M.S. degree students should have an M.D. (or equivalent) degree, and sub-specialty/specialty training from an Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education program. Candidates with other health care related advanced degrees will also be considered.

Assume that you are applying for the Ph.D. program. (The application process is the same for the M.S., so don't worry about the fact that you can't specify this on line.) Please read the information below before beginning the on-line application process as we do not need all the information necessary for the other degree programs, and we need some things not specified.

The application process is identical for all Ph.D. applicants in the graduate school. Below are some specific points to help you through the process
Part I: Specify "Clinical Scientist Training Program." Do not put a second choice. You will join the program on July 1, not Aug.1 as stated on that page.
- Part II: Personal information; all needed.
- Part III: Academic Information: WE DO NOT NEED THIS INFORMATION. LEAVE BLANK.
- Part IV: Standardized Tests: WE DO NOT NEED THIS INFORMATION. LEAVE BLANK.
- Part IVa: Test of English as a Foreign Language. We do not need this information unless you have been in this country for only a short time.
- Part V: Academic Institutions Attended and Degrees Received: Supply all this information. Ask for a transcript to be sent from your undergraduate institution, or your medical school, to Dr. Watkins. You do not need to ask for both. If you are a graduate of a foreign university, and it is difficult/expensive to get transcripts, you may send copies of the official transcripts that you have in your possession.
- Part VI: Letters of Recommendation. You need three. DO NOT SUPPLY E-MAIL ADDRESSES. Write "to be sent by regular mail." One of these letters must be from your chosen mentor and must state that he or she will attend the annual one-day program retreat in February. One should be from a person who knows you well. The third letter must be from your section chief or department chair stating the you will receive 75 percent protected research time, salary support, and research supplies if the mentor is unable to provide them. (The scholars are expected to be completely committed to this program. It is recognized that you will have limited commitment to your clinical services, but this cannot exceed the equivalent of approximately one day per week.) All letters may be sent by e-mail or regular mail to Dr. Watkins.
- Part VII: Research and Work Experience: Supply this information.
- Part VIII: Personal Statement. State your current position at BCM. Say why you think an M.S. or Ph.D. in Clinical Investigation will help you in your career development. Say where you see yourself in three and five years from now.
- Part VIIIa. Research Statement. A summary of proposed research, written by you with your mentor, including significance, hypothesis and experimental plan (3-4 pages). If there is not enough space in the on-line application, please send a word document with your printed application.
- Part IX. Demographic Information. This is optional.
- Part X. Application History. You should fill this in.
- Part XI. Not applicable.
- Checklist: Not applicable
- Signature. Necessary.
- Additional Information that we need: (1) A statement of the results of your National Board of Medical Examiners Parts I through III or equivalent exams. (The certificate is not required.) (2) A copy of your medical license, if you have one. (3) Curriculum Vitae. (4) CV & NIH-style biosketch of mentor.
