Incubating Surgical MedTech Solutions

INSTINCTSM (The Interdisciplinary Surgical Technology and Innovation Center) has a primary objective: to Incubate Surgical MedTech Solutions.

Directed by Dr. Stuart J. Corr, INSTINCTSM offers a fast-track, Biodesign-based program to take ideas from concept into reality. We are fully aligned with BCM’s vision of improving health through science, scholarship, education, and seek to provide support in making the Texas Medical Center the ‘Third Coast’ for medical innovation and technology.

Do You have an idea for a Surgical Device?
Have You identified a Problem in the Clinic?
Are You interested in Digital Health Solutions?
Will You need help with Funding and Patents?

If so, let your INSTINCTSM guide you.

INSTINCT offers unique resources to allow for prototype development and networking. Such examples are:

INSTINCT Incubator

Item Definition

Founded in 2013 by Dr. Billy Cohn, the INSTINCTSM Incubator has gained great momentum and experience in assisting with fabrication and prototyping of medical devices and technologies. We have multiple ongoing projects and seek innovative ‘makers and minders’ to help build working proof of concepts.

INSTINCT Think Tanks

Item Definition

Regular working groups focused on exposing current technology developments to our clinical faculty, residents, medical students, and researchers. Emphasis is placed on identifying clinical needs and providing a framework to explore solutions within that space.

INSTINCT BCM-Rice Surgical Engineering Program

Item Definition

Close working, collaborative relationships with our TMC neighbors are essential for success. INSTINCTSM has teamed up with the George R. Brown School of Engineering, Rice University to create this new surgical engineering initiative focused on matching surgeons with engineering faculty to form synergistic collaborations.

INSTINCT Summer Innovation Program

Item Definition

Educating the next-generation of medical innovators is imperative for the evolution of healthcare. INSTINCTSM offers an intensive 6-week immersion program in medtech innovation. Run from mid-June to the end of July, students actively engage in the biodesign process with a strong focus on hands-on concept generation and screening.

INSTINCT Surgical Collaboration Day

Item Definition

Our annual event is dedicated to fostering innovation and collaboration within the TMC community and beyond.

INSTINCT Biodesign Electives

Item Definition

Our Biodesign electives were created specifically for BCM Medical Students in mind. Ranging from ‘TMC Tech Talks’ to hands on needs validation and concept design, they offer a unique experience for BCM Medical Students to understand and engage in the principles and applications of Biodesign.

INSTINCT Hackathons

Item Definition

Short duration prototype challenges.
