Candidates for the Global Surgery Track are held to the high standard of academic excellence set by the Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. Global Surgery Fellows must also possess and/or develop a cadre of non-technical skills that are innate to success in the burgeoning field of global surgery.
Our trainees learn to “lead from the front” as tireless, self-directed, and humble team players and teachers. Fellows develop into open-minded collaborators and persistent negotiators, bridging communities, nations, and regions through academic and clinical endeavors. Exposed to a diversity of new environments, languages and cultural experiences, fellows must be flexible, adaptable, and resourceful. Creativity and optimism are key.
Fellows are expected to be patient-centered and vision-oriented, able to care for the patient in the operating room and to maintain insight into the future of global surgery.
