An NIH supported, longitudinal, multicenter project concerning neurobehavioral recovery from traumatic brain injury (TBI ) in children is in progress. The focus of this study is on development of executive functions in children following TBI, particularly in relation to frontal lobe lesions. In addition, the Laboratory is engaged in a CDC supported project concerning major depression secondary to mild to moderate TBI in adults. This project is based at Ben Taub General Hospital. The Laboratory is preparing to begin a pilot study of constraint-induced movement therapy for hemiparetic patients during an early phase of stroke as part of a Medical Rehabilitation Research Network funded by NCMRR with the University of Washington as the applicant organization. Other projects include a clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of an errorless learning technique for treatment of learning problems in children following TBI. As part of the TIRR-based Research and Training Center for TBI, the Laboratory is comparing the efficacy of the errorless learning technique to a traditional method of instruction which permits the trainee to make errors. Previous studies have shown that persons with frontal lobe lesions experience perseveration and interference from errors during the early stages of learning. Other research activities in the Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory include an NIDRR funded collaborative clinical trial of methylphenidate for treatment of working memory (i.e., retaining a telephone number in memory while preparing to dial it and searching for a coin) in adults who have sustained a severe TBI. This project involves Baylor, University of Texas Health Science Center, TIRR, and the University of Washington. Research initiatives include pilot studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging to elucidate mechanisms of recovery from TBI.
Clinical interests include neuropsychological assessment of neurosurgical patients, especially patients undergoing resection for treatment of intractable epilepsy and patients with Parkinson's disease who undergo pallidotomy.
