Fellowship Programs

Baylor College of Medicine / The University of Texas Medical School at Houston Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Alliance is committed to providing the highest possible quality of interdisciplinary postgraduate fellowship training for rehabilitation professionals. To this end, the PM&R Alliance offers a range of specialized fellowship opportunities through programs supported by federal training grants and through the support of our affiliated institutions.

Application Requirements for Clinical Fellowships

Fellowship positions include the following:

Advanced Rehabilitation Research Fellowship Training Program

The goals of the program are to develop rehabilitation professionals with research expertise in spinal cord injury, stroke, Parkinson's disease, and amputee rehabilitation; neuropsychological and cognitive rehabilitation; rehabilitation outcomes; and rehabilitation policy. The fellowship consists of required didactic course work, participation in ongoing research projects, an independent research project, grant writing experience, research presentations to local and national audiences, and submission of research results for publication. Fellows will select from among 16 experienced M.D. and Ph.D. research mentors representing a wide array of research interests from basic science to social policy and varied disability populations (e.g., spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and stroke).

Training Period: Two Years

Clinical Fellowship in Spinal Cord Injury

These fellowships prepare fellows to develop skills in acute SCI management, acute rehabilitation, and long-term care of persons with SCI. Goals include developing proficiency in all aspects of care provided to persons with acute and long-term SCI; developing expertise in clinical decision-making regarding rehabilitation aspects of SCI care; developing a sound background in diagnosis and management of neurogenic bladder and bowel, sexuality and fertility, spasticity, pressure ulcers, pain and other pertinent SCI secondary complications; and developing and demonstrating the skills of team leadership in an interdisciplinary environment.

Clinical Fellowship in Interventional Pain and Sports

The principal educational goals and/or objectives for this program are: become proficient in all aspects of care provided to persons with acute, subacute and chronic pain syndromes; develop expertise in clinical decision making regarding medical and rehabilitative aspects of pain care; develop a sound background in diagnosis and management of invasive procedure utilized in treating patients with pain; develop and demonstrate the skills of team leadership in an interdisciplinary pain environment; develop proficiency in teaching medical students, residents, and other allied health professionals; develop proficiency in research in the field of pain rehabilitation.

Fellow will participate in inpatient and outpatient clinical activities at all affiliated programs; perform invasive pain procedures at affiliated hospitals under supervision of pain attendings; participate in acute pain consultative activities at the training locations. Will supervise and teach medical students and residents under the mentorship of program attendings; participate in appropriate pain educational activities at the training locations; will work closely with clinic nurses in monitoring treatment of all aspects of health rehabilitation.

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology

This fellowship provides general training in clinical neuropsychology. Fellows are trained in neuro-psychological assessment with a variety of clinical populations. Didactic experiences include neuroanatomy and clinical neurology. Fellows also participate in research and demonstrate their competence by presenting a paper and/or submitting a manuscript for publication. At the completion of the fellowship, fellows are fully prepared to enter the profession of neuropsychology and are eligible for board certification.

Training Period: Two Years

Clinical Fellowship in Brain Injury Rehabilitation

Train on a brain injury unit and learn effective team leadership and medical management of persons with brain injury, including consultation-liaison, admission screening, acute and post-acute care, vocational and educational rehabilitation, and work with families. Develop skills to manage spasticity through serial and inhibitive casting, medications, motor point and nerve blocks, botulinum toxin injections and intra-thecal Baclofen pump. Understand the mechanisms of action and side effects of pharmacologic agents used for neurobehavioral, cognitive and affective dysfunctions after brain injury Develop expertise to perform mental status and neuro-functional examinations; to interpret neuroimaging studies, EEG, evoked potentials and neuropsychological testing; and to relate these findings clinically. Learn to assess and treat cranial nerve, musculoskeletal and other dysfunctions caused by brain injury. Learn to develop and implement behavioral modification programs for persons with brain injury. Develop an awareness of medico-legal issues pertinent to brain injury, including competence, guardianship and expert witness testimony. Learn administrative skills in program development and evaluation, team leadership, and quality improvement.

Fellowships in Neuroplasticity, Neuroimaging, Medical Rehabilitation and/or Clinical Trials

The goal of the program is to provide postdoctoral fellows with mentored research training to prepare them for careers as independent investigators in medical rehabilitation research. This multidisciplinary program is designed to produce academicians who are capable of competing for Federal grants and mentoring the next generation of investigators in rehabilitation research. A training-faculty representing externally-funded basic science and clinical investigators drawn from various departments of Baylor College of Medicine, the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and Rice University, mentor the fellows in conducting hypothesis-driven projects in two areas of concentration, including (1) neuroplasticity and neuroimaging, (2) medical rehabilitation and clinical trials.

Clinical Fellowship in Pediatric Rehabilitation

This fellowship provides opportunity for the fellow to become proficient in all aspects of care provided to children with physical disabilities; develop expertise in clinical decision-making regarding rehabilitative aspects of patient care; develop the necessary background in Pediatric Rheumatology, Neurology, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, growth, development and psychosocial issues to design and manage effective rehabilitation programs for children with physical disabilities; develop and demonstrate electrodiagnostic skills, including intraoperative studies; chemodenervation techniques, and develop and demonstrate clinical research skills.
