Texas Childern's Sleep Center

The Sleep Center at Texas Children's Hospital is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders in children.

Directed by Pediatric Neurology and Developmental Neuroscience faculty at Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children's Sleep Center is recognized as one of the preeminent pediatric sleep programs in the nation and is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. It is one of eleven sleep centers in the United States and one of two in Texas devoted solely to the care of children. A multidisciplinary team with training in pediatrics including child neurologists, pediatric otolaryngologists, pediatric pulmonologists, and pediatric behavioral psychologists care for the pediatric patients seen at Texas Children's Sleep Center.

Texas Children's Sleep Center providers are experienced in caring for children and are trained to recognize and treat a wide spectrum of pediatric sleep disorders. Common disorders in children include problems falling asleep or staying asleep, breathing problems during sleep, sleep walking and abnormal movements during sleep. Less common problems include narcolepsy, excessive daytime sleepiness, seizures during sleep and other medical and neurological problems that affect sleep.

Visiting Texas Children's Sleep Center - What to expect

Texas Children's Sleep Center serves approximately 1000 children yearly, and performs sleep laboratory testing on approximately 1800 children annually for sleep disorders.
Specialist care
Sleep disorder specialists take an extensive sleep disorder history and physical to properly diagnosis the patient, then offer lifestyle and medical help to manage the sleep disorder.

Testing and diagnosis
Registered pediatric sleep technologists perform all night sleep studies on children with suspected sleep disorders. The studies are interpreted by board certified sleep medicine physicians.

Teaching and research
Residents from Baylor College of Medicine rotate through Texas Children's Sleep Center to receive training in pediatric sleep. Physicians interested in becoming sleep specialists also are trained in Texas Children's Sleep Center.

Drs. Daniel Glaze and Bobbi Hopkins are investigating obstructive sleep apnea in children through a grant from the National Institutes of Health. This research will help pediatricians better understand and diagnose how sleep disruption or sleep apnea impacts the mental and physical well being of a child during the day. Another part of this research will provide hard data to support common wisdom that surgeries such as tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy improve sleep apnea. Research evaluating sleep problems in children with autism spectrum disorders is funded through Autism Speaks.
