Global Health Initiatives by Current Faculty and Fellows
- Curriculum development and training:We have developed supplemental material and a training program for the WHO Emergency Triage Assessment and Training course. The program was piloted in Lesotho. We are currently working in Guatemala with the Pan American Health Organization to develop the program in Spanish for use in Latin America.
- Our current PEM fellow in the global health track has adapted the South African Triage Score for use in Botswana and has completed a successful training program at Princess Marina Hospital in Gabarone.
- Emergency department process and improvement: We are working with partners at hospitals in Guatemala, Botswana, and Malawi to develop and implement triage systems in their emergency departments.
- Developing and implementing technology in low-resource setting: We are collaborating with Rice University to develop an inexpensive, simple device to provide bubble continuous positive airway pressure. We will begin preparations to test a prototype at several sites in Africa in the summer of 2010.
