March 13, 2009
Dean Gmoser, President of the BPAA, called the meeting to order on March 13, 2009. He thanked the organizers of the Pediatric Postgraduate Symposium, Drs. Drutz, Correra, and Tapia. He then read the minutes of the previous meeting. Next, the 2009 winners of the Reba Michels Hill Scholarship were introduced. Lauren Raimer-Goodman (Human Trafficking in Houston), Jai Anandam (Methods in diagnosis of STD's), Elijah Bolin (Predictors of Poor Outcome in Pulmonary Vein Stenosis), Mitali Ruths (Nerve blocks for Chronic Migraine), and Kelly Hicks (Ambiguous Genitalia in the Houston Mexican-American Population). We also heard updates from several of last year's winners.
Next, Dr. Gmoser presented this year's contributions from the alumni association to Dr. Morey Haymond, interim chair of the Department of Pediatrics. We contributed $1,000 to the infant car seat fund at Ben Taub, $2,000 to the Blattner Lectureship (which, for now, will become part of Grand Rounds), $3,000 to the Reba Michels Hill Scholarship Fund, and $4,000 to the newly established Ralph D. Feigin, M.D. Lectureship (now part of the Pediatric Postgraduate Symposium).
Dr. Haymond thanked the alumni for their generous support, and after a brief review of the search efforts to find a successor to Dr. Feigin, requested a moment of silence in memory of Dr. Feigin. He indicated the department continues to have great success in attracting the highest quality of resident candidates as well as funding for research.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
Dean J. Gmoser, M.D.
