Research Interests

The main interest within Dr. Versalovic's Therapeutic Microbiology research laboratory has been gut health and the interactions between the indigenious commensal microbes (probiotics) and the host. Recently however, the scientific community has started to take great interest in the human microbiome and have only just begun to realize and understand just how vast the human microbiome really is.

Sabeen is a member of Dr. Versalovic's Texas Children's Human Microbiome Center. The facility will be housed on the 9th floor of Feigin Center and will include core labs such as the 454 sequencing core and a microarray core. There will be a huge amount of data generated from these core labs, which will be managed by various databases, specifically set-up for these labs. Sabeen will be part of the group involved in data acquisition, data mining, data analysis and bioinformatics.

Education/Background

Sabeen gained her BSc. (Hons) degree from University of East London, UK, in 1997. Upon graduation she briefly joined the Institute of Ophthalmology in London. The project she was working on involved working on a corneal dystrophy called Congenital Hereditary Endothelial Dystrophy (CHED), which had previously been mapped to a region on chromosome 20p11.2. In the summer of 1998, Sabeen secured a position as research assistant at Zeneca Agrochemicals. She was responsible for retro-collection of clones that had been generated in the previous 30 years.

Upon arriving in Houston, She gained employment at Bacterial Barcodes Inc. in 2002, where she increased her skills in various molecular biological techniques including repetitive element based PCR (repPCR). She also supported the informatics team in database design, schema, testing and validation of the Diversilab System software. She has written the training manuals and user guides for the DiversiLab System software 3.0.
