Molecular Genetic Pathology Fellowship Program

Program Description

This 1-year multidisciplinary ACGME-accredited Molecular Genetic Pathology fellowship program is a joint effort between the Departments of Pathology & Immunology and Molecular and Human Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH), and offers comprehensive training covering the entire spectrum of molecular genetic pathology. At the end of the core 12-month fellowship period, fellows are eligible for dual-certification by both the American Board of Pathology and the American Board of Medical Genetics. Opportunities for a second year of translational research are available for select candidates

The core curriculum consists of:

Molecular Oncology and Cancer Genomics: Fellows are trained to review, interpret and assist in the sign-out of both traditional molecular assays (real-time PCR, Sanger sequencing, FISH) as well as clinical genomic tests including next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based testing such as whole-exome sequencing, targeted panels, SNP arrays etc. Fellows learn to interpret these test results in both solid tumors and hematological malignancies and in both pediatric and adult populations.

Genetics of Inherited Disorders: Fellows receive training in the principles of genetic testing that covers more than a hundred Mendelian disorders using standard Sanger sequencing, as well as MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, and NGS-based clinical diagnostic testing such as whole exome sequencing.

Molecular Microbiology: Training covers principles of molecular testing covering all aspects of infectious diseases, including viral load monitoring by PCR, viral genotyping for resistance mutations, bacterial identification by pyrosequencing, etc.

Molecular Neuropathology: This is a unique module offered by the fellowship program where residents are exposed to the principles of molecular testing in benign and malignant neurological and musculoskeletal disorders.

In addition to the core curriculum above, fellows are required to participate in:

Bioinformatics Workshop: A 12-course hands-on informatics workshop at BCM/TCH intended to serve as basic training for biological data handling and database mining.

Molecular Pathology Course: A didactic course offered by the molecular genetic pathology faculty for residents/fellows covering all aspects of molecular genetic pathology.

Human Genetics Course: A course in the principles of human genetics offered by the faculty in the BCM Department of Molecular and Human Genetics

Opportunities for rotation and case review are available with the world-renowned BCM Human Genome Sequencing Center, and the departments of Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Pediatrics (Hematology-Oncology and Genetics) to enrich the educational experience. Weekly conferences in pathology and genetics are included in the program.

M.D. with board eligibility in AP, CP.
