Statement of Goals:
This elective is designed to expose medical students to child and adolescent outpatient psychiatry in the greater Houston area. This elective will be based at the main campus of DePelchin's Children's Center. DePelchin's Children's Center is the largest single provider of mental health care for children in Houston area with 6 outpatient locations and services including counseling, residential treatment, foster care and adoption, and early intervention and prevention. This elective provides students with experience in evaluating and treating a diverse population of children and adolescent patients.
Learning Activities
This elective will provide a teaching environment to learn about a variety of pediatric psychiatric conditions and their psychopharmacological and therapeutic management. Medical students will have the opportunity to learn interviewing skills that are developmentally appropriate for children and adolescents who are undergoing psychiatric evaluation. Teaching activities involve observing resident and attending physicians performing psychiatric evaluations and mental status evaluations. Students will have the opportunity to participate in assessments and medication follows up appointments under the supervision of attending physicians. Students will learn to develop treatment plans and collaborative relationships with therapists and psychologists as part of an outpatient treatment team and observe psychological testing if time permits. Additionally, students will participate in case discussions with faculty and residents.
Evaluation Methods
One to one faculty evaluation based on patient interview and management skills incorporating feedback from other clinicians, student presentations and write-ups.
