Statement of Goals:
This elective is designed to expose medical students to Inpatient Psychiatry in the largest urban county medical hospital in Harris County. This elective will be based at the Ben Taub General site. This elective provides students with extensive experience in evaluating and treating patients in an urban county hospital inpatient setting.
Learning Activities
Teaching focuses on improving student's skills in evaluation of and treatment planning for psychiatric inpatients. Students experience firsthand the modern issues impacting inpatient psychiatric treatment, including public health issues, managed care and length of stay, forensic and ethical issues, such as involuntary commitment process, guardianship issues, and balancing resources while delivering safe and ethical care to psychiatric inpatients. Students receive immediate feedback and supervision of interviewing and patient care skills. Students participate in several case conferences where residents and faculty present and discuss inpatient psychiatric assessments and management plans.
