Statement of Goals:
This elective provides students the opportunity to be involved in the assessment and treatment of elderly psychiatric patients. The student assesses and manages a select number of geriatric patients.
Learning Activities
Students are taught how to evaluate geropsychiatric patients after general psychiatric interviews. The student should acquire knowledge and skill about the differential diagnosis, neuropsychological evaluation, and laboratory assessment of geropsychiatric patients. Students attend weekly case conferences, geriatric journal clubs, and team meetings. Common presenting problems include dementias with associated behavioral disturbances; delirium; psychiatric problems secondary to medical illnesses; and mood disorders. Site include The Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
