Statement of Goals:
This elective can take 1 day student and 2 night students. Students are assigned to Ben Taub Psychiatry Emergency Room and function as sub-interns with responsibility of assessing patients in the psychiatric emergency room and for evaluating patients with psychiatric symptoms in the medical/ surgical observation areas.
Learning Activities
Students should learn rapid diagnostic assessment techniques, crisis intervention skills, and rapid treatment approaches particularly pharmacologic approaches. Students attend daily rounds and other pertinent lectures or meetings. Common presenting problems include delirium, psychosis not otherwise specified, suicidal ideations, homicidal ideations, and psychiatric symptoms secondary to general medical illnesses, psychiatric symptoms secondary to substance intoxication or withdrawal, and exacerbations of chronic psychiatric disorders.
