Statement of Goals:
This elective will bring to light many of the problems which cause serious physical, emotional, and biopsychosocial trauma to patients but are currently not well-discussed in the academic medical curriculum. Topics include child maltreatment, trafficking, interpersonal violence, homelessness, and elder abuse. This elective aims to not only provide education and awareness but also equip future physicians with practical applications to service and advocate on behalf of their patients. First Meeting Date: Tuesday, October 4, 12 noon - 1 p.m.; Location: DeBakey M321/323; Additional Meeting Dates: Oct. 11, 18, 25; Nov. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
Learning Activities
The elective involves a series of lectures featuring representatives from various Houston area non-profit organizations which provide services to at-risk populations or work to promote awareness and education of health-related issues. Many of these organizations have established programs and presentations specifically aimed at educating medical professionals to better recognize, treat and follow-up with patients in these hostile situations. These lectures, while differing in topic, will all aim to elucidate the role of the healthcare professional in the lives of their patients.
Evaluation Methods
Attendance of a minimum of 8 hours (out of 9 total hours). Minimum: 0.5 credit hours.
