Learning Activities
The student is expected to participate in the usual daily activities of the pediatric house staff, including: daily patient examination and data review, presentation on rounds, daily educational conferences and the admission and discharge of patients from the PICU. The student should improve his/her skills, conceptualizing the physiology and pathophysiology of the cardiorespiratory system, and critically reviewing bedside and laboratory data as it pertains to the patient. The student should also learn basic ventilator strategies and indications and techniques for various procedures performed in the PICU, including: intubations, arterial and venous catheterization, and naso-duodenal feeding tube placement. Overnight call is not mandatory, although taking call once weekly will enhance the educational value.
