Statement of Goals:
This four-week clerkship in pediatric gastroenterology offers practical experiences in the clinical diagnosis, documentation, and management of pediatric patients with nutritional, gastrointestinal, and hepatic problems.
Learning Activities
Upon completing this elective, the student should be able to examine the abdomen effectively, as well as understand the indications and diagnostic usefulness of the rectal examination in children. The student is responsible for assisting in the clinical work up and management of patients admitted to the nutrition and gastroenterology service in the pediatric ward and clinic of Texas Children's Hospital. Other experiences include observation and assistance in techniques used in the biopsy of the liver and the small bowel, intestinal endoscopies and manometry of the GI tract. The students are required to participate in teaching rounds and section conferences.
