Statement of Goals:
This elective will help student learners to (a)recognize key features discovered in the history and physical exam that can be related to abuse or neglect (b)articulate their reasoning when including consideration of abuse or neglect in their differential diagnoses and (c) contribute to the safety and protection of their pediatric patients through responsible communication with community partners in law enforcement,social work and the judicial system. 9a-5p (4 wks)
Learning Activities
Clinical activity will be divided between the inpatient consult service of the Children's Assessment Center outpatient clinic and Child Protective Health clinic. There will also be opportunities to observe MDT meetings within the hospital as well on interprofessional meetings with representatives from IFS,DAO,LE in review of cases of suspected child maltreatment.
Evaluation Methods
The student's performance will be assessed by the grading system of H,HP,P,MP,F. At the end of rotation the student will be assessed on his/her ability to obtain a pertinent H&P and to perform and document a physical exam on an abused child, as observed by a CAP attending.
