Statement of Goals:
The orthopedic surgery service at Texas Children’s Hospital - Houston offers a student clerkship in pediatric orthopedics. The clerkship includes both outpatient and inpatient activities. It may be tailored to those students not only interested in orthopedic surgery as a career, but those interested in the primary care specialties.
Learning Activities
Upon completion, the student should have an understanding of normal musculoskeletal pathophysiology of non-traumatic pediatric orthopedic disorders, such as developmental hip dysplasia, clubfoot, cerebral palsy, myelodysplasia, and scoliosis. Participation in morning rounds, outpatient clinics, and surgery is expected. Night call is expected. Orthopedics Pediatric Surgery elective is four weeks with a single faculty, residents, fellows and other faculty upon availability. The student accompanies assigned Faculty to the OR, ER, clinic, etc. The student will take call Night of Call. The student will have the opportunity to learn about common orthopedic problems, including diagnosis, management, basic splinting techniques, etc. Includes a four week rotation based primarily in the office, with an emphasis on subspecialty that you are assigned to.
