Statement of Goals:
Special Clinical Electives must be approved by the department for students desiring a special type of elective experience at BCM or an "away" clinical rotation at another institution. Special electives must have Department Coordinator approval to certify the course as equivalent to BCM Elective course offerings and acceptable to count toward the 32 Credit Graduation Requirement. Pre-requisites for "away" rotations may vary according to the program offering the elective. "Away" rotation are generally reserved for fourth year medical students.
Learning Activities
The clinical emphasis at Ben Taub Hospital and Baylor St.Luke's Hospital will be on the breadth of general neurosurgery, both cranial and spine. Additionally, at Ben Taub hospital the student will also have exposure to head and spine trauma. The Veterans Affairs Medical Center service has a large focus in spine, both routine and complex, as well as cranial neurosurgery. At Texas Children's hospital, the student would gain exposure to pediatric neurosurgery. At the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, tumor surgery and pain control.
Evaluation Methods
The student will be evaluated by the neurosurgery faculty with input from the resident team. A single evaluation pooling together everyone's input will be submitted for each student.
