Statement of Goals:
The objective of this elective is to allow the student to develop experience in clinical or laboratory investigation. Projects can be developed using the General Clinical Research Centers, but more often, projects are restricted to laboratory investigations.
Learning Activities
The objective is to offer a full-time research experience to a student who may wish to pursue a career in research. The participating laboratories emphasize molecular (recombinant DNA) techniques, cytogenetic techniques, biochemical techniques, and tissue culture methods. The laboratories have many postdoctoral trainees and graduate students. Examples of current research areas include gene therapy, muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis, inborn errors of metabolism, fragile X mental retardation, neurological disorders, dysmorphic syndromes, evaluation of maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein testing, molecular cytogenetics, and more basic studies of gene regulation and gene cloning. Participation in literature and research seminars, clinical genetics conferences, genetics rounds, and genetics clinic can be accommodated during this period. This elective is offered under the auspices of Molecular and Human Genetics.
