Statement of Goals:
OFFERED THROUGH THE TEXAS ACADEMY OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS FOR TWO-FOUR WEEKS DURING THE SUMMER BREAK BETWEEN BLOCKS 6 & 7 CONTACT CAROLYN OLSON FOR APPROVAL This course is intended for all preclinical medical students, regardless of their specialty interest. The students observe the practice of family medicine in private practice settings. The goal of the course is to provide students with a clinical experience during which they have opportunities to talk with and examine patients; learn about the symptoms patients present to physicians; observe the process of treating patients and begin to apply basic science material to clinical problems.
Learning Activities
The student accompanies family physicians as they provide care in the office, hospital, nursing home, or patients' homes. An important objective is for students to understand the relationship between the family physician and his or her patients and community.
Evaluation Methods
THIS ELECTIVE DOES NOT COUNT TOWARD 32 CREDIT GRADUATION REQUIREMENT WHEN TAKEN BY A PRE-CLINICAL STUDENT. PRE-CLINICAL CREDIT ONLY.
