Statement of Goals:
The goals of the PCIC elective will be to not only expose but also include students in the ever-changing field of primary care in the American healthcare system and to firmly establish administrative and curriculum support of primary care at Baylor. By the end of the elective, students will understand the current state of primary care and its role in helathcare reform, the practical aspects of running a primary care clinic, and the many barriers that patientsface in accessing primary care. Students will also actively participate in a clinical improvement project with a faculty mentor in a primary care setting.
Learning Activities
Through Primary Care Prograss, students will apply to become part of PCIC and will then choose or be assigned an innovation proect and faculty mentor. The student will work with their mentor to outline project goals and design an approach to meeting them. The type and amount of work per week that students decote to the project will vary and will be agreed upon between each student and his or her respective mentor. Students will be required to lof their hours worked each week and mentors will be resposible for providing periodic feedback to their students throughout the project. The elective will also involve approximately monthly seminars throughout the uyear in which there will be didactic or discussion session on issues in primary care or clinical improvement. This seminar will also serve as a forum for PCIC students to discuss their progress on their projects and brainstorm with the group for new ideas. Students must attend at least 80% of these seminars per semester that they intend to get credit for the elective. Routine conflicts and make-up sessions will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
